Another year, another successful TrueLogic Halloween party. Following the annual tradition of celebrating All Hallows Eve like no one else can, the Truelogic employees came up with their best for the costume, video, and room decorating competitions — all for the sake of the Halloween spirit, to grow closer as a company, and of course, to win lots of cash!

Three teams competed for the top prizes this year: Admin Room (web developers, training and marketing guys), Ops (sales and production), and the Middle Room a.k.a Business Support Room (finance, content and hr).

Each team participated actively in the video and room decoration contests. It was a virtual free-for-all in the individual costume contest.

The competition was fierce, with every team putting every ounce of creativity into their plans, and put together the most amazing Halloween celebration to date. While everyone was rightfully proud of their work, there can be only one winner for each contest.

Spooky Costume Contest

The creativity of costumes was just breathtaking, if not hair-raising. Each participant obviously worked hard to stand-out. This year’s spookers were an interesting mix of characters: Jason and Freddie Krueger came back to life; the headless nun scared the holy crap out of everyone; the disgruntled bride was as creepy as hell and so was the possessed Geisha.

Dota’s Pudge, Chuckie (the killer doll), and the holier-than-thou American Horror Story nuns also came to play. The hunchback of Content entertained everyone with her moves and outshone Maleficent, who never got an invite, but crashed the party anyway.

It was difficult for the judges to choose who among the nine finalists should take home the Php 5,000 cash prize.

Spooky Costume Contest Winners:

Second place – Ariel Dacanay

Top Winner – Au Banaag

Spooky Video Contest

After the individual awards were done, the attention shifted to the team contests, and the competition ramped up. The teams kicked it off with the video contest that had diverse approaches and themes. Moving chairs, groping ghosts, and sound effects – lots of sound effects – petrified the audience.

In the end, it was the Admin team who rose above the others and got Php 5,000 cash for their effort. Project managers CJ and Pao should start considering acting jobs for their believable performance in the video.

Winner: Admin Team

Spooky Room Decoration Contest

The next category was room decoration, arguably the most labor intensive. Each room started oozing blood, collecting cobwebs, and amassing arsenals in a matter of hours. It was probably the most thrilling among the 3 competitions.

Other than the theatrical showmanship, each room came up with designs and presentations that impressed the judges. So much so that they awarded each with Php5,000 for the sheer effort and selected a winner for bragging rights.

Winner: The Business Support Room

Finally, the judges awarded the team who got the highest combined points from the three categories with Php 15,000 cold cash. The Business Support Room, having the most number of points, was declared the winner.

Overall Contest Winner: The Business Support Room

High Five Celebrations

The first being the movie night with Dracula last October 17, another successful event hosted by HR, this year’s Halloween Party is the second part of the company’s 5th anniversary celebration called High Five.

If everything else kicks off with this much enthusiasm and energy, then the next anniversary celebration will be a tough act to follow.

It’s that time of year again when bed sheets start floating, zombies begin groaning, and people start dancing to the tune of Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Yes, it’s Halloween.

For most folks, All Hallows’ Eve centers on kids trick or treating around their neighborhood. For the adults (like us here at TrueLogic), however, it is often celebrated at the office.

At TrueLogic, we always love to get into the festive spirit, be it of the living or the dead. We love officeparties because it’s a great way for everyone to loosen up and have a good time, and Halloween is always a great excuse to throw one. What’s more? Prizes of fresh meat and brains (or not) await.

Not sure what to be for Halloween this year? Let the clever folks at TrueLogic inspire you with theircreepy, classy, and downright creative costume ideas. Here are our Top 10 picks, as presented by our employees throughout the years.

10. Kapre

One of the staples of Philippine folklore, kapre is a hairy giant with glowing eyes similar to the Westernogre, but far more sinister than Shrek. Here, our kapre is holding a tiyanak, a malevolent dwarf in Philippine folklore. The creature takes the form of a baby and lures unsuspecting victims deep into forest by crying like a baby.

Let’s just hope no one runs into this creature (or the baby) on their way home.

9. Vampress

Move over, Vlad. If there was ever a throne in vampiredom, the ladies have definitely fought (or bitten) their way to it—as is apparent in this photo of a lovely, scary female vampire from the office. With All Hallows’ Eve just around the corner, consider this a tribute and a love letter to these lovely, bloodsucking ladies of the night.

In her defense, she’s never said ‘bleh, bleh, bleh’ in her entire life (all 350 years of it).

8. Creepy Doll

As if dolls weren’t creepy enough, here, one of our own shows us that it CAN become even creepier. If a kid unluckily comes across this creature at night, *boom* childhood likely ruined.

Chucky’s mistress, perhaps?

7. Faceless Ghost

What’s scarier than a ghost? A faceless ghost.

Here, one of our employees perfectly captures the essence (and scare factor) of the legendary Japanese Noppera-bō, or faceless ghost.

The perfect partner for Slenderman, maybe?

6. The Joker

Why so serious?

This one’s not a monster. He’s just ahead of the curve. Creepy, crazy, and disturbing. Even Batman would get a run for his money with this Joker.

Now, let’s put a smile on that face.

5. Scarecrow

Is your mind playing tricks on you? Or is he?

One of the resident psychiatrists of Arkham Asylum, Dr. Jonathan Crane, comes to life in this outfit by one of our own. While this Scarecrow won’t make you hallucinate and become delusional, he (or more accurately, she) can still bring out your worst nightmares and scare you to death. Dr. Crane isn’t here right now, but if you’d like to make an appointment…

4. The Addams Family

They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky. They’re all together ooky, they’re none other than the Addams family.

While they weren’t in a museum, people still came to see ‘em.

They really are a scream. The Addams Family.

3. Jack Sparrow

He’s dishonest, but a dishonest man whom you can always trust to be dishonest.

The Immortal Captain Jack Sparrow comes alive (and ashore) with this impressive getup. It has such a lovely ring to it, and it’s not a bad look, really.

Now, all we need is a bit more mascara, a few cases of Jack (pun intended), and a loyal, merry band of misfits, and off to the Seven Seas we go!

Thank you, captain!

2. A Walker

Zombification has moved up several notches when it comes to the scare and grossness factor, no small thanks to The Walking Dead . Here, one of our dedicated employees shows us the right way of becoming a zombie/walker with just the right mix of gore, grossness, and awesomeness.

We just hope he doesn’t run into Rick, Carl, Carol, Daryl, and the rest of the gang from TWD.

1. A Construction Walker

Can somebody give this guy a hug?

Here we see one of our employees masterfully transform himself into one of the undead. Blood, guts, decay, and a hunger for brains and fresh meat, what more can you ask for?

Looks like this zombie had to literally dig himself out of his grave. Well, no guts, no glory, right?

Boys and girls of every age, wouldn’t you like to see something strange? Then come with us and you will see, this, our town (hall) of Halloween.

Everybody scream! This is Halloween! Dress up, get your creepy on, and have fun! We know we will!

Last month marked another big stride into digital for the Financial Times. The global business news organization held its third annual Digital Learning Week focused on digital leadership and data visualization.

Our CEO, Itamar Gero and I were invited by Elka Requinta of the FT’s Communications team to speak at this exciting event.

Itamar spoke about big data and categorized it into three major sections: Volume, Variety and Velocity.

Here are some interesting facts from his talk.

  • Did you know that every day we create as much information as we did online up to 2013?
  • In 2006, we’d created more than 3 million times more data than all of the books ever written.
  • 48 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute.
  • 293,000 status updates posted on Facebook every minute.
  • 570 new websites are created every minute.

The exciting part about all of this information is what the world can do with big data. Predicting epidemics, predicting movie blockbusters and analyzing customers calls in real time are just a few of the possibilities that are being explored.

The real question is the future and how this data will be used. Itamar put a list together at the end of his presentation that shows where we’re headed and what leaders are doing to make big data improve our quality of life.

My talk was about Personal Branding Online and its impact on decision making from a buyer.

I tackled a few major points about what personal branding really means, how to develop your brand, and what impact personal branding has. here’s a few things from my talk.

  • 80% of people have searched for other people online.
  • 80 million people are Googled each day.
  • 92% of companies use social media for recruitment.
  • 42% of consumers complaining online expect a response within 60 minutes.

A few months back, Jason Cruz (Social Products Director at MRM Worldwide) and I both spoke at a Blogging event. I heard him talk about how his company has metrics for applicants, and taking a look into the history of their online footprint before hiring.

Your personal digital footprint online can affect your career path, open doors or ruin your career. After all, you are what you post. I outlined the important principles of branding yourself, and maintaining your brand.

It was an honor to speak at the event, and we’re proud to be a part of the effort to educate and share ideas about our digital worlds.

The FT’s speakers list included BuzzFeed, the BBC, LinkedIn, ABS-CBN, among others and won the ‘Game Changer’ at the Institute of International Communications in Europe in 2013.

As soon as employees arrived and the party kicked into high gear, it was clear that The TrueLogic Wet Republic 2014 was going to be a blast! The TrueLogic team started to arrive in Liquid Pool and Lounge just after 5PM. As the searing heat of the Manila sun starts to fade, the employees trickled in, lining the edge of the pools. We didn’t know where to look: at the buffet table with the mouth-watering grilled pork and chicken dishes, the inviting mini-pools, or the well-stocked bar. The drinks lining up the bar – Grey Goose, Patron, Jack Daniel’s, etc. – loosened up the hardworking peeps. It’s party time!

TrueLogic Townhall – Manila Ocean Park Edition The sun set, dinner was served, and the DJ began his set with some Rihanna remixes. Townhall kicked off soon after with Marketing Director Clayton and CEO Itamar as hosts.

  • Feedback on a PPC Project: “I really appreciate the honesty. It builds trust. I’m way more inclined to push the button on campaigns knowing that you have my best ‘professional interests’ at heart, rather than just turning over numbers. Proper Account Management.
  • Feedback from another client: The Local Optimisation Report looks awesome; client wishes to thank TrueLogic.
  • From Angela and Operations, a shout-out to April of Operations, Jonas of Workforce, Jayvee and Rom-Jaye of Content, and Paolo of QA for a client’s On-Page Report.
  • From Rex and Workforce, a shout-out to Joan for successfully completing the creation of the new Workforce tasking guide
  • MJ, Content Manager and Zhai, Operations Manager also congratulated the following Writers and Editors for receiving the week’s cash incentive as they successfully hit their targets. Since June is a critical month, they are helping the team achieve content production higher than our capacity. A great achievement!

Writers: Justin, Bjorn, Rom-Jaye, Abby, Ely, Ysrael, and Andy Editors: Vince and Grisel

  • Shout-out from Zhai to the Disavow team (Stanley and Cesar) for the manual penalty revocation of two link clean-up projects.
  • And finally, a shout-out from MJ (on behalf of everybody) thanking the HR boys for organizing the Wet Republic 2014.

Special Announcements

  • Everyone cheered and congratulated newly-promoted QA Specialists Hannah and Edwin.
  • Pam of Finance celebrates her birthday on June 27.

After Townhall After Townhall, the merriment continued. The party people started dancing, swigging cold beer from the minibars, and chatting up with colleagues. Pocholo, a Jr. Web Content Writer, lightened up the event some more with a mesmerizing poi dance exhibition.

Games organized by Sam and Mica from Operations and the cash prizes given away were the highlights of the night. The first game, Beer Drinking Contest, saw the CEO being hailed as the champion. Followed by Trip to Jerusalem with the Department Managers dancing to Psy’s Gentlemen. Finally, teams from each group piled up wet-soaking clothes for The Wet Tower contest. Everyone who joined the midyear event felt it was a welcome break to the daily routine and that the Wet Republic was one of the year’s highlights. We all look forward to more fabulous company events in 2014 and in the years to come.

June 21 marks a new milestone for Sean Si and the SEO-Hacker team. Not just because of the success of the SEO Summit, but also that one little thing behind this event– The cause. The proceeds of the event are going to the poverty-stricken children of Timoteo Paez Elementary School. We are excited for what comes next for Sean and his team! So here are a few things that cover what happened at the 2014 SEO Summit:

THE SPEAKERS

The line-up of speakers was great and personally, I have been an avid follower of these three guys for a while.

  1. Jason Acidre – The inbound marketer famous for his creative / out of this world link acquisition methodologies and a blog that could be re-branded to a Google Link Building guide! He is CEO of Xight Interactive and author of Kaiserthesage.com.
  2. Benj Arriola – The SEO legend and winner of multiple international SEO competitions. He is VP over at Internet Marketing Inc.
  3. Sean Si – The overall entrepreneur, sales and SEO hacker who never fails to inspire and motivate people from different backgrounds. He is a motivational and leadership speaker as well as CEO of SEO-Hacker.com.

Jason Acidre

Yesterday was my first time seeing and hearing Jason speak at a conference and I gotta tell you, with the right understanding, questions and will power to learn, you’ll find a bunch of hidden gems in his presentation.

It’s as if you are doing a one-on-one with the guy and it has a more personal experience attached to it.

A few things that stuck to my head during his talk:

  • Guest posting at the right places. Popular news outlets and blogs have sources, question is, who are they?
    • In a private discussion I had with Jason, he mentioned that to find the sources, it’s only a matter of using search operators and looking at file structures in URLs. Really clever trick and is incredibly easy to do.
  • Don’t complicate things. Simplifying processes is the best and only way to go.
  • Create linkable assets that are conversion driven
  • Create content so good that it makes you “high”
  • What he learned and applied from playing professional Counter Strike (Video Game)

If you haven’t heard of Jason, I highly recommend that you check him out at kaiserthesage.com and attend his talks. Amazing guy, link builder, inbound marketer and SEO.

Benj Arriola

As I mentioned earlier, Benj won a few international contests and these aren’t just any contests, they’re like those raffles you join that you know out of millions of people, there’s no chance whatsoever for you to win. In Benj’s case, he won– not just once, but a few times. Benj is the most interesting internet marketer that I have ever had the chance to meet and listen to. His excellent visuals and structure of how he presents his deck is right on dot and it’s never a dull moment.

Benj talked about his journey as a web developer from blackhat to whitehat. Now, remember when Sean Si said “Secrets that they (Jason, Benj and Sean) don’t usually blog about”? Benj took that and ran with it. He showed us his crazy journey on how he won some of the contests one after the other, it was the most creative link building (although considered to be black hat nowadays) I have EVER heard of. His background in development came really handy on each of the competitions. I won’t go into detail about it but let’s just say that at one point, wordpress (Yes, THE wordpress) banned him from using their platform. You’re probably thinking how he managed to do that– well, it’s a perk of going to this conference. So make sure you go to the next one.

If you were a beginner SEO practitioner, his talk (even the blackhat portion) would have given you so much clarity on what the industry is all about.

A couple of things I learned from Benj:

  • It’s never too late to learn. As long as there is a will and you are motivated, you can do it. Benj started as a QA Chemist. Think about that for a second.
  • Link building is all about creativity. No matter what vertical you are in, there WILL be something that interests people.
  • Ranking isn’t everything
  • Not to use any of his old techniques that he talked about.
  • Natural links are the only thing that matter

Benj defines that clear line between loving what you do and doing what you do.

Mr. Arriola does not practice blackhat techniques today and never uses it for client purposes. This was only used back when search algorithms were different.

Sean Si

I first heard about Sean through search, of course. And ever since then, I was a big fan and avid reader of SEO-Hacker. It’s amazing to see how much SEO-Hacker has grown and developed their brand throughout the years. I had the opportunity to meet Sean after the event and for those that don’t know him, he is the most humble and down to earth guy. He is a Christian and a very nice guy. He is the type of guy that has a gift in motivating and inspiring. A true leader.

His talk was a good compliment to Benj and Jason’s. He gave an in-depth look into business development and how the SEO-Hacker team grew their brand.

Some things that Sean touched on:

  • Don’t do content marketing for SEO. Do SEO FOR content marketing.
  • Use micro-surveys for content ideas and user generated feedback
  • Build relationships and grow your network
  • Business and operations
  • Humble beginnings from just putting himself in a situation that he knew nothing about back then and pushing himself to succeed

Sean provided insight into so many questions that the audience had. Sean also mentioned that this would be an annual event, to grow the SEO and Marketing community here in the Philippines. So look out for next years SEO Summit and be sure to go!

CONCLUSION

The entire event was a great display of expertise and collaboration. The fact that all proceeds help a child in need is worth every penny. The learning and knowledge that was shared that day was priceless. I look forward to SEO Summit 2015! See you all there!

The entire SEO Summit was brought to all of us by Sean from SEO-Hacker and JCI Manila. I’d like to congratulate SEO-Hacker and Sean Si for organizing this Charity event full of intelligent people and its huge success! We at TrueLogic are looking forward to more amazing things!

The following two tabs change content below.

Realizing that innovation is not an exclusive accountability of any single department or employment class, TrueLogic Management launched the Innovator Awards program in the first quarter of the year. We wanted to encourage everyone to pitch in and contribute to exploring potentials and opportunities for the organization. I personally think that rolling out a program that involves top management opening its doors to everyone’s ideas is one of our best moves as a company – ever. I’m proud to be part of a Management Team that does not limit innovation by leaving the task of coming up with new things to a single department.

Now that our program is about 3 months old, ideas from different departments and across several levels have been coming in, 2 winners were announced, and at least 3 ideas have been implemented, I challenge everyone to take this program to the next level.

1. IT’S NEVER JUST ABOUT THE MONEY.

Yes, there’s some gas money and other prizes at stake, but the focus should never be on winning the prize. This is about you and the opportunity for you to become a champion of change.

2. CREATIVE SKILLS ARE AS IMPORTANT AS TECHNICAL SKILLS.

A few years back, DreamWorks conducted a survey among senior HR executives. The survey showed that in the near future, creative skills will be a more important driver of the economy than technical skills. Those findings validated what the company’s leaders knew all along: innovative input from everyone – including the creative ideas from the company’s HR staff, accountants, or lawyers – are valued and actively solicited. The employees’ creativity is critical for keeping the company ahead globally.

3. DON’T JUST THINK OF SOMETHING; DISRUPT!

Suggesting an idea about something that is practiced in other companies might do the trick a couple of times, but we want more.

Taking the innovations program to the next level means trying to think of something that your leaders might not have thought of before. Challenging and disrupting what is established involves coming up with an idea, and then deconstructing and reconstructing it over and over until you have the finished product that would knock Management off its feet.

4. PITCH IT RIGHT.

Present your idea in a manner that would catch your judges’ attention. Writing only one or two sentences to convey your innovative idea might not be the best way to go. Covering too many interrelating elements would also do your entry more harm than good. This is where tapping your Supervisor or Manager’s expertise and advanced presentation skills should help do the trick. Once you have the perfect innovation entry, do not hesitate. Reach out to your boss and demand sponsorship of your ‘masterpiece.’

So boys and girls, we are at a point where as an organization, we refuse to merely tread water. We want to continue leading and winning. Let’s all be glad we have such a program and work together to establishing a communal space to innovate within TrueLogic.

I look forward to receiving more entries in the coming months.

All our materials were homegrown and tailored to serve participants of varying skill levels and aptitude. Skill Expertise Certifications for learning-intensive courses are now available, coupled with laboratory-type trainings designed for role-specific tasks.

IN-HOUSE TRAINING AND INFORMATION DEVELOPMENT

Our Learning Center has facilitated learning sessions designed for up and cross skilling. On-Page Optimization, Keyword Research, and CRM trainings are some of the recent certification training some of our own employees completed. The Skill Expertise Certifications for On-Page Optimization and Keyword Research are both at a 5-day duration, using a blended learning approach, which is highly focused on experiential learning. We give participants workbooks, certificates, and pins for a full learning experience.

We published user manuals for TrueLogic’s CRM, a robust centralized office system, to keep track of projects, campaigns and clients. We authored documentation on its usage and data analysis for varying levels of accesses. The release of the manuals were complemented by supplementary training which takes the participants through a tour focused on the tool’s ease of use and smart capabilities.

Trainings on introduction to Search Engine Optimization, Google’s Algorithm Updates, and SEO Strategies are coming soon.

PUBLIC LEARNING EVENTS

We opened our first Keyword Research Workshop to the public on April 30, 2014. EYE CHECK-UP ANNOUNCEMENT

One thing we value here at TrueLogic is our employees’ health, and we take all the steps necessary to ensure that each of our team members stays in shape for working. Earlier last week, we announced that there would be a free eye exam and vision testing for all employees.

The free eye exam and vision testing will happen on Wednesday, April 30th, from 12 noon to 9 pm in the office. An ophthalmologist will be onsite within the said hours to conduct check-ups and tests. Credit arrangements can also be made with Paterno Eye Care Center should you choose to buy their products or acquire their services based on the doctor’s recommendations. You may send me or any of the HR staff a message if you have any questions about the event.

That’s it for the previous week; please join me again next week as I recap the highlights of this new week!
